Purvis Wayne Gilmore was born in Fulton, MS in Itawamba County on June 26, 1925. He was born to Elmon L. Gilmore (March 4, 1900 – November 18, 1981) and Jewell E. Gilmore (March 23, 1907 – August 10, 1998).
Elmon L. Gilmore was born in Chester Co, Tennessee on March 4, 1900. His parents, Jos Gilmore and Mary I. Elmon Gilmore, who married on April 2, 1893. Elmon Gilmore was drafted for both World War I and World War II and worked as a Timber Cutter for the Saw Mill industry. Elmon then later become a farmer by the 1940 Census. Elmon Gilmore had completed elementary school, 6th grade. He passed away on November 18, 1981 and is now buried in Egger Cemetery, located in Caledonia, MS. Jewell E. Gilmore was born in Baldwyn, MS to Lige Stanford and Dashia C. Stanford on March 23, 1907. She had completed elementary school up to the 8th grade. Jewell Gilmore spent her life as a housewife throughout her marriage with Elmon L. Gilmore. She passed away on August 10, 1998 and is buried next to her husband Elmon Gilmore in Egger Cemetery. The Gilmore family lived in Itawamba, MS and later moved to Lowndes, MS as recorded in the 1940 Federal Census. The Gilmore family had five children, Purvis Gilmore, Lettia Gilmore, (Hubert) Bufee Gilmore, Huey Gilmore, Lowery Gilmore. Purvis Wayne Gilmore had reached 5th grade, elementary school before enlisting for the U.S. Navy. Purvis worked as a farmer in rural, Lowndes, MS. He worked on his own accord until he eventually listed on October 25, 1941 to the U.S. Navy, joining the Unit U.S.S SIMS. |
Jewell E. Gilmore

James Larry Gilmore was born on June 5, 1938 in Artesia, Lowndes County, MS. He served in the Mississippi National Guard and retired from the Columbus Light & Water Department. James Gilmore was a devout Baptist who spent most of his time hunting and fishing.
James married Mattie Selma Newman Gilmore and proceeded to have three children. His son, Donald Wayne Gilmore, married Karlene of Hattiesburg, MS. Two daughters, Elisa Sharron Tubbs, and Dana Lynn Fant who married Robin Fant of Starkville, MS. James Gilmore passed away on February 9, 2016 at North Mississippi Medical Century in Tupelo, MS, and was later buried in Egger Cemetery. Funeral services happened on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Gunter & Peel Chapel. Wanda N Gilmore Weir was born on December 2, 1941. Wanda Gilmore was a secretary-treasurer for the “The Rental Center of Columbus.” She went on to marry her husband, George H. Weir of Columbus and had four children: Katie Perkins, Cecil M. Weir, Timothy B. Weir, Gary P. Weir. Wanda Gilmore Weir passed away on December 4, 1983 at Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa, AL. Services happened on December 4, 1983 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Gunter & Holmes Funeral Home with burial at Springhill Cemetery at Millport, AL. Hubert Earl Gilmore was born on November 25, 1944 in Columbus, MS. He would attend the old Southside Baptist Church with his family. Hubert Gilmore enlisted for the US Military on April 26, 1967. He served four years in the US Army, in which two of the four years would be during the Vietnam War. He went on to marry Shirley Wilson Gilmore and had three children: Devin Gilmore, Renay Butts, Bethany Cabrera. Hubert was discharged on October 26, 1970. He later became a hairdresser and retired after 37 years in the profession. Hubert Gilmore passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at his home in Columbus, MS. Letha Mae Gilmore was born on September 11, 1928. Letha would marry R. G. Carr, who was a Corporal in the US Army during WWII. She would reside in Tuscaloosa, AL and move into a different house with her husband after 9 years. She passed away on October 25, 2013 in her house. Services happened on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Her body now rests in Egger Cemetery in Caledonia, Lowndes County, MS. |
